F.A.Q.

Confused Kiki KittyHow do I get my avatar to show up in the comments?

Wordpress uses Gravatar. You will need to go to Gravatar and create an account using the same email you  listed with your comment on KatGirl Studio’s site. Your avatar will also have to be G rated to appear in the comments section of  KatGirl Studio’s site. Just watch the video on the site and it will answer all your questions.

Can I license your existing work?

As long as a piece wasn’t commissioned by another company or individual. I am always open to licensing. So please send me an email indicating what image you would like to license and for what usage and I’ll be happy to discuss prices.

Who are your clients?

A list of past clients can be found here. Clients for projects currently in the works will be added to the list when the projects are completed.

Will you proofread and edit my storybook manuscript?

All text is the author’s responsibility and should be in final form by the time you send it to me. However, as the book progresses I can correct typos you spot or make other minor adjustments as you direct so that the final product is letter perfect. I strongly recommend that all manuscripts be proofed and corrected by a professional editor. Many publishing services can provide that.

How should I send my manuscript?

You should send if already formatted and broken down by page with the illustrator notes as shown below:

Example:

“The Little Kitty ran past flower shops and candy stores, shoe makers and inns until she came upon a square with a few carts, a coffee shop and a fountain. Ladies with parasols walked arm and arm with fine suited gentleman past children jumping rope while fashionable people sipped coffee and chatted about the day within the cafe.”

Notes: The little kitty overlooking a Victorian style cobbled stoned park with a grand fountain, a cart, coffee shop gazebo, ladies and gentleman in Victorian dress, birds & children playing. The time of day is just before sunset on a cloudy day.

You can send it as a editable PDF, a Word “.doc” or Word “.docx” if you have Word 2007.

Will you illustrate anything?

I will not illustrate extremely violent, hateful or racist material or porn. If you need something high mechanically technical or super technical Sifi or mecha I am probably not the best person for the job to be completely honest. If you need these types of illustrations I would recommend looking on the CG Society website.

How long will it take?

Single illustrations 7-14 days

Full 32 page picture books 3-4 months

These time frames do not reflect project scheduling

Will you also print and sell my book?

The short answer is no. I do not own or operate a book printing machine or press. I will add an image of your book and a link to your site or where its being sold after the project is completed. If you want to know more about book printing, publishing and promotion I recommend reading these books.

Can you tell me about the licensing of art?

There are two types of art licensing. One is when you make a collection of designs and grant the right to make them into products to manufacturers. The other way is when a company contracts you to make something for them and you grant them the right to use the work you created for them .

PEG'sWhere do I find info on the illustration industry?

I recommend reading the PEG’s book first, it’s the essential handbook for Graphic Artists. After that I recommend searching the internet for things you want to know more about. There’s a wealth of knowledge out there. You can also join groups related to the field you want to work in and go to industry events, conferences and conventions.

How much should I charge for my illustrations?

There’s no cut and dry answer for this. Pricing depends on alot of factors like how long your art takes you to make, how “in demand” you are, the project time frame, rights being purchased etc. For my price structure I researched what others creating similar art charged and what I felt my skills and time were worth. I usually ask the potential client what the project budget is and try to work out an illustration package for them based on that. Sometimes it’s just not possible but most of the time it is.
